Statement by H. M. Mohammad Zaher, the former King of Afghanistan

September 19, 2001

In the Name of the Almighty God

His Majesty Mohammad Zaher, the Former King of Afghanistan’s Address to the Afghan Nation

The Noble and Freedom Loving Nation of Afghanistan,

My dear brothers, sisters, sons and daughters:

As you know, I have always shared the agony and sorrow of the Afghan people, which has persisted for over two decades.  Today we see that the tragedy of Afghanistan still continues unabated, my concerns and anxieties for the future of Afghanistan have increased in these precarious moments.

Despite the many sacrifices that the courageous nation of Afghanistan has endured for the noble cause of freedom and human dignity, we must acknowledge with regret that the presence of foreign imposed terrorists has caused unrest and danger for the stability of our country, and peace in the region. Historically, our nation has acted in accordance to the guidance and tenets of Islam, embraced moderation and tolerance, opposed terrorism and terrorist behavior, which is alien to Afghan traditions.

I appeal to the Afghan people and to their sense of honor and patriotism to rescue ourselves from this dangerous situation, so that in the future we have exonerated the Afghan nation before God Almighty and history.

In order to fulfill this national duty prior to the convening of the Emergency Loya Jirga on the basis of the three-point plan (consists of convoking an Emergency Grand Assembly, in order to elect a head of state, and establish a transitional government), effective and immediate measures are under consideration, which will be announced shortly.
My dear compatriots:  I am convinced; with your participation and the cooperation of the international community our struggle for the return of peace shall continue until we fulfill our desired goal, which is the liberation of our homeland and people.

So help me god.
